FAQ

Questions about
loafing sheds.

What's the difference between a loafing shed and a horse barn?

A loafing shed is open on one or more sides — horses walk in and out freely. A horse barn is fully enclosed with stalls and doors. Loafing sheds are simpler and more affordable, while barns offer more control and storage. Many horse owners have both.

How many horses can fit in a loafing shed?

As a general rule, plan for about 100-150 square feet per horse. A 10×16 shed works for one or two horses. A 12×24 handles three comfortably. We can help you size it based on your herd.

Can I close in the open side later?

You can, but at that point you're essentially converting it into a barn. If you think you might want an enclosed structure eventually, it may be more cost-effective to start with a horse barn model. We can talk through both options.

Are loafing sheds good for Oklahoma winters?

Yes. The open front is oriented away from prevailing winds, which gives horses protection from cold rain, sleet, and north winds. Horses are naturally cold-hardy — they need wind and rain shelter more than they need a heated barn.
